QUESTON: Hi Melanie, Our cat seems to have some black things under his mouth and on his chin. I thought it may have been food or him chewing on something, but can’t find anything he could have chewed. Any ideas? ANSWER: Most cats particularly cats with light coloured coats have obvious Feline Acne. Possible causes include stress, poor grooming, a reaction to medication, or an underlying skin condition. Given that he has had some medication and even stress could be a factor and often stress can mean that the cats don’t clean themselves properly I wouldn’t panic yet. The Vet may recommend a specialised shampoo or gel to clear up the breakout, or antibiotics if a bacterial infection accompanies the acne IF it gets worse. Personally I would just keep an eye on it. Hopefully it will improve slowly over the next week or two. Keep you eye out for any discharge, redness or swelling. The antibiotics I sent you would be a likely treatment anyway if we need it. I have attached an image of a “normal” case of mild acne. Most cats have this, including some of my girls. I actually had a show judge give me a slap on the wrist after a show and told me I should should be cleaning this. A case like this can be dealt with just by getting a wet cloth or baby wipe and gently rubbing daily. Not so much that it makes it red or sore but just a gently back and forth rubbing motion for a minute or so every day for a week would improve it. In your case as it sounds a little worse I would just leave it for now and see if it improves. If the scab comes loose and can be removed in time then great. Keep me posted if it gets worse. Q: My DSH persian has black stuff in her ears. What do I do. A: This is likely ear mites and I would suggest you get to your vet to confirm and start treatment. |
